BROTHER LAWRENCE
This week I read Brother Lawrence's PRACTICING THE PRESENCE OF GOD...copyrighted in 1895 by Revell, but because of its 300 year impact, edited and reprinted by Whitaker house in 1982 (available from Amazon for $5.99)! It warrants reading and rereading.
It has to do with the greatest secret of living on earth; namely, cultivating the reality of the Presence of God. It is God's plan to indwell us by His Holy Spirit and it is possible for us to be acutely aware of that incredible truth all day, every day in all situations and environments. That is what Brother Lawrence learned to do, to his immense pleasure and delight. I would very much like to do the same.
I also read (again) this week HIS INDWELLNG PRESENCE by Norman B. Harrison. It is one of the great books I believe. On the last page he is suggesting to a friend some practicalities on how to lift ones heart into continual communion with God, so that you can say "My principle enjoyment is the enjoyment of God's presence."
When you get up in the morning let the sun remind you that Jesus is the light of the world and ask Jesus to shine in every part of your life today. As you dress, let it remind you that Jesus has clothed you with His righteousness. As you use water to wash your face, let it remind you of how Jesus has washed you with His blood to be free of sin. As you eat breakfast, you can think of how Jesus gives you spiritual food to strengthen your inner man in order to enjoy Him and do only His will today. Keep it up!
2 Cor 10.5 says..."we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ..." Methinks we are missing a great deal more than we realize by failing to take advantage of this incredible privilege. Paul said "To live is Christ ..." Major Thomas said "You cannot have more, and you need not have less."
